24 Hours of Nurburgring & KW Suspensions

24 Hours of Nurburgring 2009"Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother" - Kahlil Gibran. In 2003 THMotorsports opened it's doors with hopes and dreams and like every endeavor there’s ups and downs. We've had doubts, but kept our faith and in 2008 we hit our stride and have finally become recognized as a industry leader in the automotive performance industry by being invited by KW Suspensions to be their guest at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.

In 2008 we were the Midwest’s #1 distributor for KW and found ourselves being invited by KW Suspensions to the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. We gratefully accepted their request and jetted off for the German countryside where we were whisked around by KW first to the great Nurburgring Racetrack. KW Suspensions didn't hesitate for one moment to snatch us off of the airplane and take us straight to the track. Upon our arrival we saw how the Europeans live and breath racing.

24 Hours of Nurburgrin from the air. There was a plethora of Porsche's, Audi's, VW's, and BMW's all outfitted with the best. Out of 168 cars running the 24 hour event, 92 were running KW suspension. From the Alpina M6 to the Monthey Porsche GT3 RSR (the winner of the race) was outfitted with KW coilovers. We soon found that the drivers of these great machines were friendly, and chatted up about the suspension with them.  One thing that we did find funny; Bilstein is one of the official sponsors of the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, thus every car on the track had their sticker on them, despite KW Suspensions being in more than half of the race cars.

After days of networking with drivers, companies like H&R and Bilstein seemed to just be left in the dust. On the day of the race, we attempted to stay up the entire 24 hours. As we watched the race, the owner of KW, Klaus took us around the camp grounds where the true magic was happening. We have never seen such passion for racing, from such a large group. The victimous track, spanning its 25+KM was filled with campers all around the fences. The scene was hard to describe, as all of our Playstation Gran Tourismo dreams came true! 24 Hours of Nurburgring campers.

24 Hours of Nurburgring at night.
We stood with groups of loud, drunk German's cheering for cars flying past us at 150km+. At night, the view was truly spectacular. On one side, you had a party going on that would rival Lollapalooza, or Woodstock. On the track there was the rumbling of Boxter 6's, V8's, and V10's ripping around the race track only with the power of stock lights. The drivers told us that if you can not feel the track, or know the track at night, you are a goner!

As morning came around, we were sleeping in the Zakspeed private box overlooking the Nurburgring finish line and as the Montey Porsche took 1st and 3rd place using KW Suspension, it was becoming evident that KW was a real winner in the race. It was truly amazing to see a company that is only 14 years old, trump companies that have been in the business much longer.

During the trophy ceremony, we found that Klaus's brother, who was racing a private team S3 took 1st place in his class and won a trophy as well. The most stunning part is that Klaus not once jumped for joy, but you could see the look of accomplishment on his face. We then wrapped things up, and headed off to the KW Plant to see how the Nurburgring race machines were so well balanced and built.

KW Suspensions FactoryDuring our visit to the KW Suspension factory we were treated with an amazing experience. Upon arrival to the factory, we noticed that everything was in tip top shape. With us, we had a representative from a distribution company, who told us that he had never seen cleaner floors in his life, which we found in the machine room!

The factory was well laid out with modern systems in place. The German’s introduced the ISO standard to the USA, and their level of manufacturing was unparalleled. All the machinery was brand new. Their process of production really was based upon the highest quality, and not to be the thriftiest. The owner of KW even told us that their profit margins are low, but they make the best product there is. They are the only manufacturer in the world who makes a stainless steel coilover including all brackets.

Next, we were guided to the R&D division, which spanned an entire 10,000sq floor! There, we saw the mad scientists testing, Shock Dynobuilding for race and street applications. I can honestly say I have never seen so many shock dyno's in one place. We continued our tour through shipment, and were astonished that all the orders placed by customers in Germany get built in 12 hours or less! If we lived in Germany and ordered KW, it would be ordered in the morning, and the next day delivered to your front door. The coding system was just wild, as they have over 2000 individual pieces that go into the coilovers. Remember, each shock, piston, body and spring is custom tailored for each application. This is no Taiwanese run of the mill coilover or process.

The reason why THMotorsports will be firmly endorsing KW as their top brand came when we arrived at an area of the factory that blew us away. About 1 year ago, KW purchased a post shock dyno and, as it stands, is 1 of 7 in the entire world. It was purchased from the BAR Honda F1 Racing team, who used it to tweak and simulate race tracks. Now it was in KW's hands! Klaus had advised us that Bilstein and H&R, both come out to use their dyno and actually borrow some of KW’s designs - go figure. KW’s research and design are unrivaled in the industry and after our KW Suspensions tour and the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, there is no questioning their products.
24 Hours of Nurburgring women.
After a most accommodating stay, thrilling racing, and being left in awe of KW Suspension’s production, we were ready to go home (well not I, but I had to go despite all the beautiful women). On the day that we left, I swore to let everyone in the United States know that coilovers are not just a name brand, or something to pick at a price point, but rather a way to transform a car using KW Suspensions.

We are looking forward to next year's 24 Hours of Nurburgring, our enduring commitment to customer service and of course, our faith in ourselves and KW Suspensions.
